During the 1970s and ‘80s, artist Martin Wong resided in the Lower East Side of New York and was a strong supporter of many pioneers of the New York City graffiti.

Wong’s advocacy for the subculture resulted in an expansive collection of some of the artists of the time such as Keith Haring, Dondi, Rammellzee, Zephyr, Daze, Lady Pink, Lee, Futura and Sharp. (Absent from the collection were most of the true Subway Pioneers).

In the interest of keeping the collection intact, Wong graciously donated his entire collection to the Museum of the City of New York in 1994. The exhibition will include over 300 mixed media paintings and 55 black books.
